Students in CSULA's Fall 2006 Math 530 class, feel free to edit this page as you wish. It's yours. Ask questions. Answer them. Set up times to get together to study. Etc.

Here is a page with questions and answers.

Here is a page with Flash Cards.

Here is a link to The History of Topology.

Here is a page with some class notes

Here is the first midterm. Here are solutions to the first midterm.

Here are some fairly sketchy solutions to the third midterm. (The one we had in class on the last day.)

Common mistakes on the third midterm: For the question that asked to prove that R is normal, a lot of folks started by saying, let A and B be disjoint closed subsets of R. So far, so good. But then they said that if A is a closed subset of R, then A is a closed interval, or a finite union of closed intervals. Not true! Closed subsets of R can be very strange. The Cantor set, for example, does not even equal a *countable* union of closed intervals! The other, less serious, common mistake on this test was forgetting to show that one-point sets are closed when showing that a space is regular (or normal).

Here’s the deal with the two chances. Between now and Nov. 30, there will be three tests. One you’ve already taken in class. One is the take-home midterm. And one will be in the 10th week.

Before the final exam, I’ll give you a 2nd take-home test. This will be an optional test, due during the final exam period. It will cover sections 2-19, 2-20, 3-23, and 3-24. Of the two take-home tests, I’ll keep the one you did better on and throw away the one you did worse on.

During the final exam, there will be two separate tests. Both will be optional. You can take one of them, both of them, or neither of them. The first of these two tests will cover sections 2-12 through 2-18, just like the first in-class test. Whichever one you do better on---this one or the first in-class test---I’ll keep the one you did better on and throw away the one you did worse on.

The same goes for the other test, which will cover everything we talk about in class after section 3-24.

To summarize:

Test #1 covers sections 2-12 through 2-18. There will be two chances to take Test #1. You already had one chance in class. The other chance will be during the final exam period. For Test #1, I’ll keep the one you did better on and throw away the one you did worse on.

Test #2 covers sections 2-19, 2-20, 3-23, and 3-24. There will be two chances to take Test #2. One is the take-home you’re working on right now. The other chance will be another take-home test, due during the final exam period. For Test #2, I’ll keep the one you did better on and throw away the one you did worse on.

Test #3 will cover everything we talk about in class after section 3-24. There will be two chances to take Test #3. One chance will be on the last day of class. The other chance will be during the final exam period. For Test #3, I’ll keep the one you did better on and throw away the one you did worse on.
